What's best book for someone to read that wants to be in the field of finance?

I'm such an amatuer in this field but would love to read more about it and just what all I need to know going in.

No one book is the best. I've read a LOT of them. Some of the ones that are worth reading INCLUDE:

All Your Worth by Elizabeth Warren (many a person with a creative mortgage wishes he had listened to her sound advice)

Your Money Rules for Financial Freedom by Michael J Laurence--this is so comprehensive you will use it for years for EVERYTHING--and you should read the chapters the author tells you to and wake up to a LOT of realities that eventually become "news" stories

The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom and The Road to Wealth by Suze Orman are two of her best, but she's got a lot of books and she's sensible and clued in. Very rational advice and info unlike a lot of these supposed "gurus."

If you want to understand economics, Thomas Sowell's the man. Everything he does is worth reading, though it's not all strictly econ per se. The man IS a genius AND he writes clearly. VERY RARE in any field. Too many "obfuscators" and they're unclear because they don't actually know what the heck they're talking about in a LOT of cases.

Never hurts to see how a gifted finance guy works--read Mary Buffett's The New Buffettology and you won't regret it.

Some would quarrel this is not all "strictly" finance, but you have to realize that the titans of finance do NOT just read finance books--they know their history, understand the basics of math and science, and more. If you want to get stuck in a "school" of bogus finance and be mediocre, restrict reading to "finance" books. If you want to not follow the herd and develop critical thinking skills, read outside of finance as well.

The Intelligent Investor by Ben Graham.
This is the guy that Warren Buffetstudied under.

I would suggest against Suze Orman, I think she is just a financial advisor, with common advice, which is a little behind. I think the black swan is a great book on finance, if you can relate what he talks about to finance. There are a few others at www.novelwagon.com with reviews.
