Can a non-profit have one board member? Which States have fewest requirements? |
I want to start a non-profit, however having trouble finding board members. Which States allow the fewest, or even one? Is there a difference between non-profit corp and organization? You must have at least 4 to be a registered nonprofit. The minimum number varies by state. I just incorporated a nonprofit in Ohio and it required 3. That may be the minimum because if you vote on something there needs to be a vote that swings it. At least that is my guess. Report It In order to recieve contributions, once you are incorporated you can, however if you are not classified as a 501(c)(3) you can be taxed for money you bring in. Also if you are not 501c3 status, the donations will not be tax deductible to the giver. Report It Most foundations do not give grants to NP s that are not 501 C3. but there is another option**. You can find a fiscal sponser who basically acts as the 501c3 for your organization while you are getting going and before you have the resources to file for 501c3. I just found one for my organization. Report It They would actually file taxes under their name on your behalf for gathering your donations and funding and releasing them to you. You would have to report to them and provide paperwork so that they can be sure that the funds are spent for what the grant was given for. Report It Fiscal sponsors can be hard to find if you are not alredy connected (it took me about 4 months to find one) but I found mine through a great source http://www.capaciteria.org/ind... Report It The IRS does require that your fiscal sponsor have a mission that closely relates to your organizations mission. Foundations expect the same as is laid our in their grant applications. Report It For example if your mission is to help battered women, you could not use the Museum鈥檚 Foundation for the Arts Foundation鈥檚 Fiscal Agent program as your mission has nothing to do with theirs. Report It The incorporation is the paperwok you file with your state to start your nonprofit legally. But the 501c3 is filing with the government for nonprofit status, (which in essence you must prove with the proper paperwork. Report It The 501c3 process should be handled by a professional so that it is done right and more likely to be approved. I found a really great attorney who is only charging me $35 an hour to handle my Inc. and 501c3 paperwork. He has been a Godsend. Report It My fiscal agent will be the FJC. They have an excellent program as they are not requiring me to make my project theirs, although I must list them as a sponsor. The Tides Center www.tides.org is a well known fiscal agent, but your 鈥榩rogram鈥?becomes their program as long as you are with them. Report It |
