Whatis performance appraisal? please tell me?

It's the act of an employer comparing what they expect you to do or to be doing, with what you have done or are doing.

An employee evaluation

A performance appraisal is a job evaluation process, often consisting of a private informal discussion with your supervisor. Some appraisals are more format than others, but in all cases they should inform the employee where improvements may be needed and in which area you exceeded expectations. The appraisal should include setting goals for future evaluations and to guide the employee in performing his tasks well.

A performance appraisal can be several things - different company's may call it an appraisal - but the way they work are often different:

In essence a performance appraisal should be a review of you, your performance in the job, a review of any training needs. This is a formal 'sit down' with your supervisor and often a 'form' is completed. They will often look at any objectives / targets set and how well you have achieved them.

Some appraisal systems do not look at performance but took as 'competence' - that is how ell you can do the competency's the company has identified as important - this approach is much more common in public sector or government based organizations.

What ever the type your HR department or supervisor should give you a briefing document explaining what it is all about, how it works etc.

Hope this helps

Hi there

A performance appraisal in its simplest form is where you sit with your manager and discuss:

* what is working with your performance,
* what could be improved,
* any blocks to your success and
* what your goals or targets are for the future.

They can be formal with lots of forms to complete by both yourself and your manager, or informal where it is just a simple chat over a coffee.

Each company is different so you need to find out what the particular policy or procedure is for your company. Check out your employee manual if you have one and ask for any forms you may need to fill in.

It helps to prepare for your review by writing down what you think you have done well, what you think you could have done better and things you would like to achieve in the coming year before you get into the review.

I personally believe in and teach all my managers the "no surprises" policy - where there should be no new information given to you in a review that you don't already know.

I write a blog for managers specifically about employee performance reviews that may give you some more information http://employeeperformancereview.blogspo...

Good luck with your review!

regards

Ingrid
