Seriously considering a business major. Anybody know more about the management major?

ive decided to major in business for next year as an undergraduate but i am skeptical of majoring in Finance or Accounting because i dont want a job at a bank or a kind of firm like Merrill Lynch

I was wondering if anyone could give me insight on the management major or if majors beside finance and accounting are worth taking?

Serge is correct. My degrees are in management, but they didn鈥檛 help me in the new economy. Finance, accounting, and economics are the best business majors right now. But, if you are compelled to study management, make sure to take extra Stat and calculus courses. Of course, studying Spanish can help if you鈥檇 like to work in HR. Declare a major as soon as you make your choice because management courses like BA101 are (obviously) freshmen level classes.

There is nothing wrong with a management major, although your options are more limited when it comes to job prospects. The trick is to make sure the major includes the subjects that managers need to know. That means a strong dose of accounting, finance, marketing, production, and quantitative analysis with courses beyond those required for every business major. For example, intermediate or cost accounting after you have completed the required financial and managerial introductory courses. It means marketing research or some other advanced marketing course. It means financial analysis, money and banking, or another advanced finance course beyond the one required of all majors.

You have to show prospective employers that you are ready to manage a broad area of business and will be conversant with the accounting, marketing, finance, or production people that you will manage. Students who take the easy management courses and shun the other subjects find their prospects much more limited.
