When I look at an average price tag, why is 1 cent left out?

For example, when I find a $20 item, why is it usually $19.99 as opposed to simply $20?

It is a psychological ploy to make you think you are paying less. It's like gasoline, when the price is $2.899, all we think about is the $2.89 and rarely think about the 9/10 of a cent that is added on, which really makes it closer to $2.90 then $2.89, but the trick works so retailers use it.

To give you the impression you're spending less money.

Believe it or not when you see that sign your brain picks up on the $19 . I always say $20 . It is a retail trick on the mind.
Many people fall for it. Just like placing items near the checkout makes you buy more things you don't really need.
