Family member passed away. Who pays the hospital bill?

A member of my immediate family recently passed. He did not know that he was sick up until the day that he died. He went to the emergency room and passed away. The hospital has sent the bill in his name and it is quite high ($30k). I heard that you are not responsible for a relatives debt if you are not married to them, is this true?

He was paying his way through college and was just finishing up he left no assets.

Whoever is handling is Estate should be given the bill,
the deceased is responsible for the bill no one else, if
he died broke and had no assets then the hospital is
stuck with the bill.

The relatives are not liable but the estate is. The estate being the assets that he left behind. So, before the assets are distributed to the heirs, all liabilities, including the hospital bill must be paid. Given that he passed away and if there are minimal assets you should be able to negotiate a smaller payment

No one has to pay the bill. The executor of his estate can choose to pay the bill, but you can contact the hospital's billing department and inform them that the payee is decreased.

Everyone in the family shares it equally. (not counting the kids)

Example, if there is 30 members, each of you would pay 1k.
