How much should two people spend on groceries a month?

I live in MA and think that I may be overspending on our grocery bill. This bill also includes cat/dog food (the cats are on prescription food which costs $50/month) and toiletries etc.
We have a budget of $500, but typically spend $700-$1000 if not more!!!! Its getting out of hand! Or is the norm now????

That does seem a lot for 2 people. I heard of people getting to the 600-800 range but it was usually for a family of 5 or 6. Things do tend to get more expensive lately.

Like where lI ive milk is averaging close to $4 a gallon and we use about a gallon a week at my house. Then eggs are $3 for an 18 ct. And we go throw like 3 of those a month. So that's 25 bucks a month for eggs and milk alone. Then theres the cereal at $4 a box which my kids go through like nobodies business and meat at anywhere from 1.99 to 3.99 a lb. So yeah stuff is getting outrageous.
