What's the safest way to Patent something?

I have some great ideas that could change the way we do things. I hear how unless you have lawyers even the patent companies will steal your idea. Can you help me with this? I will remember you when I am rich from my odeas ;)

I was amazed to find out about "Patent Pending" status. It actually costs a little, and even if you get help, it is afordable.

I got a software solution in "Patent Pending" status a few years ago. Cost $1,000 and it protected the idea for one year as we experimented with how marketable it was.

Keep in mind that it is only one year and then you need to do the more expensive REAL patent. But if you can sell that idea in that year, that is all you need.
