How does Wal-Mart pick which employee and their family member to be in their advertisements?

Do they get something for being in the ads?

I mean the print ads for local sales papers.

Throughout the year, WalMart employees are encouraged to keep track of interesting stories of their customers. Then the advertising agency looks through them and goes to interview the employee and the customers and decides whether or not the people and their story will make a great commercial.

At least that's how they do it in Canada.

(I don't know the process for how the stories get to the advertising agency.)

I'm not certain but I'm guessing that they don't paid and if they do it wouldn't be what they would pay a print model. I've also wondered why myself.
