Are business surveys worth the time?

I grew up in a time of surveys and your customer satisfaction survey (B2B) was a big part of your annual review in sales and marketing.

They probably still have a place in consumer marketing or in a very stable environment. I do not think they have anywhere near the value today despite the conventional wisdom that branding and customer service are critical. I think they might be important, but increasingly I suspect the value proposition is winning over satisfaction surveys. Now anyone with a clear advantage in their value proposition has a good chance in this day of instance Internet marketing to be heard and to get a chance to deliver on their value proposition. Brand loyalty in my opinion is declining, distribution channels add questionable value, and the consumer is shopping for the best deal for them. The Internet is absolutely cluttered with offers.

I take the surveys now with no hope of changing what is happening, never sign up for the prize, but try to reverse think the surveys to guess what data they are trying to assemble. I rarely deduce that they are being used as an early warning system but unfortunately just being used to justify an existing position which makes them pretty much worthless to the business and the consumer.
