Is marketing via email an acceptable form of marketing? Why or Why not?

No, it's called spam and is illegal in the US. That is why all of your emailing/spamming services and servers are located in foreign countries.

The only way you can do it legally is by making sure you have an opt out link in your email, that is if you are directing your marketing efforts towards US based emails. Then consider the fact that most of us hate spam, so we and our ISPs filter it out so you will get maybe 1-10% of your emails actually even being seen or read. The rest of us just hit 'delete' if it makes it through the filters.

Direct mail, dependent of your product or services may be the better route even though it may cost a bit more.

Yes it is. Where I work we just spent a mint on a new email campaign tool because we do a lot of email marketing. We have very targeted audiences we market to (people who actually visited our trade booths at conventions and said they wanted to get ads/info from us). We have found it very effective.

it should be a topic you like and it should be pre-accepted by the recipient.a good example is a newsletter from a magazine that you signed up for about a topic you like

Depends if the reciever is signed up for the mailing list or if it will just be filtered through or deleted because it's spam.

No!!!! its cheap, pathetic, and it angers me. if anything, receiving advertisements for products through email just convinces me more not to buy the product, and to stay away from it

Certainly it is a well known marketing technique, if you follow few rules:

1. Use double opt-in to get those subscribers in to your list.
That means they are giving you permission to send them email.

2. Always keep your physical address at the end of EACH AND EVERY email going from you to this opt-in list.

3. Add unsubscribe link to each and every email to this list. You are giving them chance to get out of the list if they don't want to.

4. Always provide useful product links /content which they show interest.
