How to find competitors' ads on the web?

I'm starting with web-marketing and need to know whether it is technically possible to monitor ad campaigns of rival companies? Are there any general techniques aside from surfing for luck?
above all, ppc and banner campaign are meant.
Is it possible to analyze the way some site advertises itself?

in terms of banner advertising there is a company called thomson intermedia which tracks the majority of advertising on the web. you input the advertisers name and they bring back all the placements that the advertiser is using and their spend (based on the sites rate card) in the given period. their website is http://www.thomson-intermedia.com (and no, I dont work for them)
