Really depends on what kind of service, is it a person to company service or a business to business service?

I wouldn't send a s.a.e., so unprofessional, unless it was a business reply letter - prepaid by licence.

The important things to note are personalise if possible, make sure your "unique selling point" is the most visual - in the header or first couple of lines, and best of all, leave them with an urge to contact you.

It depends on the sevice but a smart letter personalised usually is well received and gives you the scope to but your experience forward and how you can help (benefits). I reference helps

Phone the companies first and get the name of their person in charge rather than writing dear Sir/Madam. Also enclose a stamped addressed envelope.
