How does a website make money if its a free sevice?

my sister wants to start a web site but she does want to get sponsers...

I think that ads and sponsors are the only way to make money with a free service.

Adverts are the most common way, your sister will have to have a space on the website for the sponsors logo or and advert for them.

Advertising and page linking to other sites. Sponsers and selling things on their site. And pop ups.

Well if ads aren't an option to supplement the costs. It would have to come out of pocket.

Some sites have a donation button that leads to Paypal, maybe patrons who accept the free service could be asked for an optional donation.

Usually it would be by ads. That's how MySpace and YouTube make money. And I don't have an issue with ads as long as they are done in an non-intrusive way. I can't stand web sites that use ads that delay me from seeing the desired content or using the desired features.

First you need to develop a website that offers valued content to its readers and that will increase your traffic at which time you can monetize your website with affiliated links, ad sense and sponsors etc.

Maybe instead of thinking it as a website you should see it more like a magazine. Keep in mind though, simply building yourself a website is not going to give you any instant income. Websites are like any business, it takes time and a lot of hard work.
