i find that tele sales is an art. you are striking a conversation with a stranger and try to sell your commodity to him. you must be able to convince him that your product is superior than the other.

A few quick points to help you on your journey.

Like it is already been said, forget about trying to make someone do something that they truly do not want to do. You will only frustrate yourself and all those you speak with.

My personal approach when making any type of call is to position myself as a problem solver rather than a salesperson. This way it keeps me more focused on their needs and how it may or may not fit with my solutions.

Another thing I look at is to better understand what it is they are doing and why. Also I like to investigate their plans for the future. By better understand the past, present and future as it fits with my solution, it is a lot easier to position yourself to take them to the next step.

One last thought; your right when you say tele sales is an art. It is not magic or a gift you are either born with or denied forever. It is simply following a step by step process, like painting by numbers and the great thing is that any one can learn how to improve their results and achieve their goals.

I think it is a mistake to approach any potential customer from the mind set of trying to "make" someone do anything. You want them to want what you have without them feeling any pressure from you.

Good sales people are elegant and gifted at relating to others. You have to form a connection with the potential customer. One simple thing I would do, in telephone sales, was change my accent and word use depending on the ethnicity of who I was talking to. If the person was elderly I would talk to them in a calm, supportive and caring tone.

You have to make it all about them, but in a way that is not obvious. Once the connection is formed then it is so much easier to make the sale. You can't just pitch a product, you have to relate with the customer.
