Why is demography so important for marketing and advertising?

This may surprise you, but people of a type tend to buy similar products. A marketer of a product wants to appeal to people who would buy their products.

So, rich people who might watch a show would be rather more interested in a Mercedes commercial than a Kia commercial.

People with young kids might pay attention to diaper commercials more than senior citizens (different diapers, I suppose).

If a company has a spend a lot of money to advertise, why spend on people who have no desire for their products? How often do you see feminine hygiene commercials during a football game or beer commercials during Oprah?

A company that spends to advertise to a demographic is spending less per sale to advertise and seeing more sales per viewer.

Because let's say that your item is for teenagers. You would want to advertise where there are more teenagers concentrated. You wouldn't need your advertising to go to retirement homes or where the more elderly live. That would be a waste of your money.

Do you think I want to advertise my luxury homes to a demographic that lives at the poverty level? Common sense takes you a long way.

It helps you determine and refine your target market, this in turn allows you to customize the marketing campaign to that particular group.

The "demographics" of your market is important information so you can tailor your marketing to reach your market better. But if that market isn't hungry for what you are offering, demographics do not matter.
