Why do some retailers (Like Amazon) hide prices of certain items that drop below a certain price?

I have been wondering this question for some time. Amazon.com, for example, will hide or not display prices of items that drop below a certain point. Amazon.com says that some manufacturers require retailers to hide prices of their items if they get too low. There were times when I went to Walmart, for example, and there would not be a price tag on certain items. I had use to think that it was some forgetful salesperson. But now I am thinking it was required by the manufacturer of the product. But why do manufacturers require this certain requirement? Is it something like they do not want to associate themselves with cheapness? Thanks.

It could be a marketing strategy that would keep viewers/customers curious at the proffered bait; in this case, certain products you saw on or offline. But shopping at amazon.com isn't all that bad. I prefer them over Wal-Mart because most items are almost at giveaway rates! Keep looking for that item you have in mind anyway. And, if it's no trouble, visit eBay as well for comparison. :)

just legalities. might not want to let public know how "cheap" they can make & sell products for....
