Are there too many RINGS and DINGS in TV advertising that sound like your doorbell, microwave oven, or phone?

I may not be looking at the TV at that particular moment, but I hear a ring or a ding in the background and I think "Is someone at the door?" or "Do I have something cooking in the oven?" or "Is someone using the microwave?" or "Is that my cell phone?". And I SWEAR! Those sneaky advertisers are DOING that on PURPOSE, just to trick me into looking at whatever the Hell they're pushing over the idiot box. And it just bugs me. Not a lot. No this is not a rant. But I've noticed more and more ads these days are doing that and I think there might be some kind of advertising standard that could be promoted to deter advertisers from resorting to what I consider to be a "cheap trick".

This reminds me of billboards I've seen with the image of a really sexy, scantily-clad woman as the hook...and then the copy says, "Now that I have your attention, Hal Huckster's Used Car Dealership is just around the corner"...or whatever. It's a CHEAP TRICK! And it does not generate consumer good will.

I may be more of a purist when it comes to advertising standards in that I have worked in the creative department of a major regional advertising agency as well as ad-supported, media-related businesses for over 20 years. Good copywriters and creative people in marketing are supposed to be trained in the fine art of generating positive attention for the products and companies they promote. So when one resorts to "cheap tricks", it just becomes worthy of criticism amongst professionals as an example of what NOT to do in advertising. We have far too much advertising in the world as it is now and I believe we need to raise our standards so as to make these media more entertaining and less irritating because of all the bad advertising they have to carry, just to pay the bills. So I'm saying to advertisers and copywriters, "Let's raise the level!" and not be tempted to go for the cheap trick in an effort to grab some attention.

Not only do they trick me, they send my dog into a "who's here" barking frenzy. Sneaks!

Yes and there are too many radio stations playing "police sirens" as well.

yeah, my dog goes nuts!
