How old do you have to be to be allowed in an adult novelty store in New York City?

I'm 19 years old and I work around 34th Street. I find it odd that the adult novelty shop around 33rd and 7th has a sign that says you must be 21 to enter when I'm allowed in a bar in the same area with no problem. It definitely was not because I look of age because I certainly do not, I have been told that I appear to be 16.

Do you have to be 21 for all of those places or are the stores allowed to set a limit?

The stores can basically do what they want though the legal age to enter such stores is 18. For ladies doing porn, they have to be at least 18 so there shouldn't be an issue for a guy entering such a store.

My only guess is that the store might have had problems with those under 18 getting in and to cover themselves, they only allow 21 and up.
