Is being a car salesman really that bad of a job?

I've heard from quite a few people that car sales is the worst job one could get because you never work for long at the same place, it's very easy to get fired for any reason, and well, it's not a stable job (though i've read you can make good money) Is it true?

It all depends upon the dealership and the culture that they create. Many car dealerships foster a very cut-throat environment because they are trying to motivate people with little or no sales skills and trying to get everything they can out of them. Also, many dealerships have little or no loyalty to their employees because they just crank people through hoping to get one or two "producers" out of the bunch.

It also really depends upon your personality. Are you willing to work on a very low draw against mostly commission? Are you willing to be evaluated every month based solely on what you've delivered that month? Are you willing to cold call, be persistent, and fight a mostly negative impression (at least initially) from all your clients?

I've had friends who have been very successful as car salesmen, and though they did have some "salesy" traits, they were for the most part hard-working, honest, and good listeners.

The type of dealership also can play a factor in terms of the clientele.

I don't think a car salesman is really that bad of a job, but there are a lot of things to factor. First and foremost, I think the general feeling you get from the management and co-workers is the greatest factor in how enjoyable your work experience will be there.

As with any sales job, your ability to establish and maintain relationships, and referrals and word-of-mouth will be huge factors in your success as well.

Good luck!

Car salesman is an unstable job. You could work for days without getting paid. Of course you would have to sell a vehicle to receive a paycheck. Most car dealerships don't get much business.

Don't take this information I give you lightly!

It's a horrible job. Everyone that comes inside the dealership to look at cars already thinks you are ripping them off. You have no say so on the price of the car. You end up being the middle person between the finance manager and an ever increasingly angry customer. To further my point....go into any car dealership and ask any sales person how long they have worked there. I will go out on a limb and say most will tell you less than 1 year.

I have met some car salemen in the UK who have been at the same place for years. To them it is a good profession.

Mind you, they sell prestige cars not old junkers.

I imagine it gets more difficult the cheaper and nastier the car is.

I know car salesmen who make in excess of $100k each year and I know some who can't make enough to pay their bills. It all depends on you and the dealership.
Most people walk into a dealership knowing they need a car but are intimidated by the process of buying one. They inherenlty distrust car salesmen because over the years, car salesmen have been represented negatively in the movies, etc.
You need to break down that barrier first and gain the trust of your customer. Next and more importantly, you need to maintain that trust by listening to thier needs, filling those needs with the best vehicle at the best price. If you do this, you will gain repeat customers, and referrals. This will not happen overnight but you will seperate yourself from the stereotypical car salesman by your actions.
