If you're planning on being a lawyer, what is a foreign useful language to learn? 10 pts?

Deciding between French, German, Italian, Latin, and Spanish.

The lawyer i want to be is like one of those ones who works in the legal department of a fairly large corporation or maybe as a prosecutor.

I'm thinking French or Latin?

Only take French if you plan to deal with people who speak that language -- Canada, France, working at the UN.

While Latin is the root of most of our legal terms, in law school you learn the term and what it means. That requires no actual knowledge of the language, only being able to remember how to pronounce it correctly and what the meaning is. Look at a Legal Dictionary, many of the Latin root words are currently used in everyday speaking. Besides that there has been a move in the legal industry to make contracts and documents easier to read for the non-lawyer. In actual practice the days of using incomprehensible Latin phrases in contracts to impress the other side ended in the 1980's.

Spanish! The population of the US is becoming more Spanish-speaking. If you intend to see clients, you need to have that edge to attract Spanish speaking people. Many of the bar association are holding crash courses to teach attorneys Spanish so that segment of the population will be served.

spanish most def! I work a a judges office and I would have to say most def go with this one! I always get people that call my office needing something and I dont know spanish... when I worked at the state attorney's office... same thing but more spanish speaking was going on up there

depeneds where youlive, like if you live in new york, spainish would be good, but if you live ni an italian community, learn that, but youshould get spainish, get's you farther in lif, and mad people know it.

Why Latin? That's a dead language.

It definitely would depend on where you live and what kind of corporation you are working for. The language that is becoming the most widely used across the United States is Spanish - hands down. There are more Spanish speaking countries than French or German ones, which could mean that there are more companies that you would be able to work with/for by learning Spanish.

Latin would be useless. Spanish definitely.

There is a large percent of Spanish and Polish speaking people in the US therefore I would advise you to learn both. Normally corporate America is paying higher for people to speak these languages. It would look great on your resume and provide you with the flexibility to work anywhere.

latin. many legal terms are latin origin. and in the usa a growing number of latinos are requesting spanish speaking attorneys...for such as public defenders.

also corporate firms doing business with latin america prefer spanish speaking lawyers for contracts and clarity

In the US, Spanish is probably the best second language to learn. And that has nothing to do with being a lawyer, it's just practical because there are so many Spanish speaking people in the US.

Latin would most likely be the least useful. There are some legal terms based on Latin, but other than that it would be pretty useless.
