Legal secretary interview?

Hi
Im Nicola, I am 28 and have just graduated from university. I am looking for work in the legal profession and have an interview with a London law company on Friday. I am useless at formal dressing and was wondering what I should wear to the interview. I am being interviewed by a man and a lady and after the interview I will be lunching with them. Can you give advise on what's best?

Nicola x

I would recommend a skirt suit. The skirt should fall either right below the knee or right above the knee (no more than 1" above the knee).

Either a black or navy blue skirt suit (matching) and a white blouse (not a frilly white blouse, but a one that is kind of like a guy's dress shirt). Make sure you wear nylons and matching shoes.

If you want to wear jewelry, wear a simple gold chain necklace (no religious jewelry) and a pair of stud earrings.

Tie your hair back (if you have long hair), either in a French braid or with a hair clip [but it should be a low 'pony tail'].

During lunch, make sure you do NOT order liquor, even if you see they order it. Eat something that is not messy (the lunch will be considered part of the interview) so a salad would probably be a good idea.

Good luck....

a pantsuit, maybe Hilliary has a spare one.

Hi Nicola! I am currently working as a legal assistant/secretary. I love my job.

I would recommened wearing a business suit (if its warm enough wear a blazer and a matching skirt). Black pants and a nice shirt always work, too.

Good luck with your interview! You will do great. Just be yourself, speak clearly, be nice and you will ace it!

Working in the legal profession is awesome! Best of Luck!

I would advise a dark coloured plain suit with perhaps a single colour shirt / top underneath. They always say you shouldn't try to assert your clothing tastes too much in your initial interview. Also, try to avoid anything too revealing (i.e. short skirt / low cut top) this will instantly elevate you in their opinion.

Good luck for your interview anyway. I hope you get it.

You can be professional without having to shun fashion. I would recommend a cute pants suit...probably black, with either a white button down shirt, or another solid color, not too bright. Wear close toed heels and either wear your hair pulled back, or if you wear it down, make sure it is styled. Go easy on the makeup and jewelry. Make sure you carry a briefcase or a zipped folder that contains copies of your resume, references and any letters of recommendation you have.

But most of all, have fun, be yourself, and GOOD LUCK!

The golden rule is to dress as though you were already in the job so that the interviewers can visualise you in that role. Lawyers are never flashy in their dress and wear conservative colours, but in a secretarial role you wouldn't be bound by that rule, so there's no reason why you shouldn't wear something more cheerful. If you've got a suit which is relatively plain but also smart, that would be very good. Otherwise you could try a smart jacket with a plain dress or a skirt and blouse. Make sure you feel good, then you'll come over well. It is, by the way, unlikely that they will drink over lunch -- that sort of thing is a no-no nowadays for business lunches.
