Moved from permanant position to casual - Legal?

Is it legal for a person to be moved from a permanent employment position to a casual one for no other reason than the boss felt a friend of his could do their job 'better' & because the friend had 'more experience'? This is subject to Canadian laws.

yep, unless you have contract or are in a Union
