New Job in a Law Firm, but have been told to pay own tax?

I have landed a great job at a law firm, they will support me whilst I study the FILEX, but I am on a 3 days They have offered me a 3 days trial which I am soon to end. They have offered me a standard daily rate and have told me to pay tax out of it myself! They said that I will be responsible for paying that. IS this legal. They also advsertised for a caseworker and LSC supervisor, but they have taken the notice out of the papers and have asked me to complete a form stating that I am competent as a Supervisor. I have told them that I am not, but they have insisted that I try and complete as much as I can.
I left my last job to start this one, as it seemed great with my own office, book in my own clients, have lunch when I want. What should I do?

.they are going to list you as a associate.
you will work up a case file.and the lawyer will
try it in court.IN A WORK COMP CASE.you deal with the insurance for a settle meant.once you do all the work.the lawyer will present it.
You will get paid so much a hour.or in some cases ,by the settlement. You will pay your on
taxes.so keep all rec-ts.

sorry u are being treated as a CONTRACTOR.
Now if u keep working past the 3day trial and want u to pay taxes figure out if u going to take a pay cut.
check with ur states employment bureau as to ur legal positions.

Basically, you are considered an independent contractor. It doesn't matter what "title" you are given, but they want you to be considered an independent contractor.

As long as they don't cross the line between independent contractor and employee (i.e. don't require you to work at set hours, etc.), then it is fine.

You would be required to pay your own taxes - basically, you would pay the full 12.9% (or somewhere around that amount) for social security instead of them paying the employer rate (normally, 1/2 the amount is paid by the employee, 1/2 is paid by the employer) but in an independent contractor status, you would pay the entire amount.

Yes, this is legal....law firms do that with their non-equity "partners"...

They are hiring you as an independent contractor, and yes it is legal to do so, and yes, you have to pay your own federal and state taxes, social security, and any local taxes.

As far as completing a form stating you are competent as a Supervisor, I would not sign anything that I am not comfortable with. If it's not true information, and you sign that it is, and something comes up down the road they will use it against you.

I guess you need to decide if this is something you want to do or not.
