How to get a job with a past record?

My sister was charged 5 years ago with possession of drugs; she was 19 at the time. She got mixed up with he wrong guy well to this day she has a record and out of 78 interviews in one year NOONE will hire her. This really makes me wonder what one has to do to rise above the system and overcome one mistake. She has been a stay at home mom while her kids were young now that she is trying to get a career started it has been a year and people cant seem to get past it, she has a great work ethic and higher IQ than most doctors. She鈥檚 always honest and up front about her record, companies cant discriminate but each time they find a creative way to say no. considering that some people with a small record in the past have children now and need these job and would do better than a recordless person might. What are her legal rights, if any? Would a letter of recommendation from some high political power get her a job? Anyone have anything to share that might help her reach her goals in life?

The most she can do is to be honest about her record.......and to send a letter, from herself, about what caused her to get a record, and that she is not on drugs anymore. With the internet, especially, nearly all companies do a background check........so, if she lies, she won't get hired, for sure. It doesn't seem fair, and I know of other people in the same circumstances. Companies are so worried about being sued by customers and/or being stolen from by people they do hire, that it is really difficult to get hired when you have a record of any kind. Still, the best bet is to write a letter, explaining how her life has changed since she was 19, and what a good employee she would be.

I think there is more to the inability to secure a job than the drug charges. Lots of people have made mistakes in their lives, and employers who interview know this.

It is nice that your sister is upfront about her record, but perhaps she should focus more on interview techniques. It is hard for me to say because I have not met or seen her, but perhaps it is the way she presents herself to the interviewer.

Job interviews are stressful, and everyone knows that. Depending on the types of jobs she is applying for and the fact she has been out of the work force for several years, maybe she lacks the skills needed and needs to freshen up her skills?

There are many other factors involved in this situation.

I would suggest your sister freshen up her soft skills, and keep trying. Perhaps re-work her resume and practice on her interview techiques.

You don't say if she went to jail..........if she did, there is the fortune society for ex cons to help them get started....
if she is smart, start a home based business....e-bay for example.............................
