Is the lower number the beta and turnover rate the better?

I am saving for my retirement, so planning hold on to my investment for 40 years.
I am checking out some funds and realize I don't know how will the higher and lower number of beta and turnover rate will effect me.
I am wondering, for beta and turnover rate, is the number lower the better??? What number is a "healthy" number for a retirement account to invest in?

thank you in advance.

The beta is a measurement of risk. 1.0 would be exactly equal to the market as a whole. If your portfolio had a beta of 2.0 then it would be twice as risky, but if the market went up your returns should be twice as high and vice versa in a down market. Betas less than 1.0 are more defensive.

If your funds are in a retirement account, the turnover rate won't matter. Turnover usually affects capital gains, but you don't have that problem if you're in a 401(k), IRA, etc.

"Beta" is supposed to measure how much the fund's management beats the applicable index. Morningstar.com has a great tutorial on funds that goes into this in detail.
