Pay off all your credit cards if you have balances. Next, establish 3 months to 6 months worth of living expenses in a passbook savings account. Following that, if you work for a company that offers a 401k, invest as much as you can in it. I would go beyond that and also invest in Roth IRA as much as I could. Only after those things, I would advise reading Peter Lynch's book. He ran Fidelity's Magellan fund for many years. He has a common sense approach to investing in individual stocks. You see, individual stocks are very tricky to invest in. If you take a big loss, you will be discouraged from investing in them again. So that is why you should follow the precedents above so that you do not take too much of a risk with your nest egg. |
