Much of Nigeria had no banking services at all until the Seventies. When Nigeria was a British colony, most banking services were provided only in the large Cities and Coast areas by large UK banks (Barclays, Lloyds). More recently, Nigeria has become a regional centre for financial crime and the government has failed to sign up to or enforce many international treaties. So international banking groups have pulled out and most services are provided locally.
