What are the differences investing in CD's versus money market accounts?

With CD, your money is locked into the CD for a set period of time. If you cash in the CD, there is a penalty.

With a money market, you have access to the money at any time.

CD usually lock up your money for a set amount of time. Up to 100K they are also FDIC insured. Since there is a timing aspect to them, they usually have a higher rate. Money markets usually pay a lower rate, but the money can be withdrawn at any time.

Cd's pay less ,take time to earn interest but are secure.
money markets can loose your money but often times make more. See a investment broker agent.

about 1 to 2 % money market are a little higher. but you must go through a bank broker or other.

A money market account pays less interest, but you can withdraw the money at any time without penalty.

None. If you got the CD's that were lost by H M REVENUE and CUSTOMS.

You cant make deposits to cds, the rates can vary on each so thats not a real big difference. A cd is more of a savings account, a money market is more of a checking but they have restrictons depending on balances and transactions per month. Cds have set terms and penalties for withdrawls, Money Markets can have fees but only if you go outside of the guidelines set by the institution. was that helpful? i sort of briefed it........

To correct some of the other answers, the rates on the two vary, some times a cd yields higher, sometimes a mm does, it depends on the time and the institution.

the difference is that your cd grows more interrest fast that money market will, but also remenber that money market are tax at the end of the year. and your cd are not tell you start to withdrawl off of them . and they are normally match .

CDs work similar like bonds. The money is locked up for a certain amount of time and promises to pay a certain interest rate. Money markets attempt to maintain a price of $1 a share and are very liquid, although some require a large deposit to open.

CD is with the bank, money market is the fed reserve.
