Whats my portfolio missing?

I am enrolled in my company 401k. they match 25% up to 6%. I am currently enrolled at 10%. My funds in this account are blended, international and short term.

I also have a rollover ira that is a 2040 retirement fund and I contribute 100 bucks a month to this with after tax money.

I dabble in the stock market but nothing of any significance. and I put 10% of my paycheck after taxes into a savings account which i transfer into a cd at the end of each year.

By the way I am only 32 but want to ready for retirement when it happens. I also own 1 property that has about 40k in equity.

My question is what if anything should i do to prepare further for retirement?

Sounds like you are off to a pretty good start. The one thing I've noticed you didn't mention was putting any money into a Roth or traditional (pre-tax) IRA. Here's some good information on IRAs (so I don't have to retype it): http://www.plannerconnect.com/retirement...

You may wish to speak with a financial planner about setting something up, I found mine at that site.

It sounds like you're doing a good job, but I'm puzzled when you say you're putting $100 in after-tax money into a rollover IRA as rollovers are usually pretax (conventional) IRAs. If this is the case, contribute to a Roth IRA instead.

Around summer 2008 should be a good time to invest in another property. At your age you should take advantage of your ability to overcome big swings in the market. Instead of CDs you could invest in some mutual funds and make regular contributions. Using a dollar cost averaging strategy you could make some serious money between now and retirement. If you do continue to get CDs you should ladder them, by this I mean get CDs that mature every month so if you only have enough for 3 CDs get 3 month CDs invest in them one per month. so every month you are gaining interest and every month you have cash in case things go bad.

Actually, you may be able to retire early. As one reponder has already mentioned you may be a tad conservatively invested. You might consider a little more aggressive allocation for a part of your money, especially the part outside of the retirement accounts--ie the CDs. Here is the deal. CD interest is fully taxable. Retirement funds outside of Roth IRAs are also fully taxable when distributed. Investments in equities are taxed at favorable tax rates. By moving a portion at least of your CD money into equities, you should increase your overall return by about 8-10% over the long term after taxes provided you do not get too aggressive with those funds.

You are doing well. I suggest you put the $100 a month into a Roth IRA since it is after tax money rather than a traditional IRA. The Roth gains and income are not taxed. The other problem I see is that your employer matches up to 6% of your 401K contribution but you are not getting the full benefit if your contribution is only 10%. You should contribute the maximum allowed by law into your 401K to take advantage of the employer's contribution. It's like getting an immediate 25% return and all the money goes in tax free. You can't earn a sure 25% any other way. You are well on the way to retirement, hopefully well before normal retirement age.

you should try investing in the stock market a little more.... energy gold and uranium stocks would be great buys right now.. as they are going to sky rocket... you should look into some energy stocks, as this is where the returns on your money are...

You can even enter your portfolio in a retirement registered account, and u can still buy and sell the stocks as long as you do not remove the money from that account

Hi MBoy,
I have to commend you on your discipline and focus. It will pay off. And, as others have mentioned, if you get a bit more aggressive without getting too scary, you could probable retire early!. Ask questions on other sites, too. You are intellingent and will take from each answer what you need. A very good site for your kind of question is moneyrec.com.
It is a new community site for investors and there are many knowledgeable people who post, available to answer questions. Free to users.
