Lewis,

If you have the money to invest now, but don't have the knowledge and experience, then I recommend you start with investing in no-load mutual funds.

A mutual fund is a collection of stocks (and in some cases bonds) collectively owned by a group of people.

One no-load company I used and had success with is Janus. There are some others - but I have experience with Janus. Look at the prospectus for each fund and see how they have done.

Otherwise I'd recommend stocks in older and stable companies to start with - companies that make or sell products that everyone buys - grocery stores, oil companies, large food companies, etc. Look in your home - what's on the shelves? What do you buy and use?
Another idea is to start with companies local to you where your local newspaper reports on local companies. For instance, I live in the greater Seattle area and our newspapers report on Boeing, Microsoft, Costco, Starbucks, etc., on regular basis. Being "in the know" helps a lot.

Also consider investing in real estate (can you afford to own rentals?) for the tax benefits.

Good luck to you.

Start out with small amounts of money and see how you do.

I am new to the investing game but the is a uy named Jim Cramer who has this show called "Mad Money" on CNBC at 6 pm and 11 pm eastern. He also has a bunch of books, get them, watch his show, subscribe to Investors Business Daily (not Cramer) and also look up a guy named William J. O'Neil also. They helped me a lot.
