What do i do with a debenture certificate?

I found a very old certificate that looks like a Bond or other monetary note. It says "Macy Credit Corp. 8% Debenture, Due January 15, 1982. $5000." Beneath that it has my name and a bunch of seals/signatures. I have no idea what it's for. Is it worth money to me?

New info- http://www.glabarre.com/item/Macy_Credit...

This is an image of the same paper I have. Completely identical except mine says $5000. This was made?taken out? 5 years before I was born, if that helps. thanks for the answers!

Go to Macy's website, investor information, and get the name of their transfer agent. The transfer agent manages stock certificates and bonds (like your debenture). Send them a copy and ask them what it is worth and what you have to do to cash it. You will most likely have to get your signature guaranteed, which is something your bank can do for you.

first off, the bond is matured.
I would contact Macy's and inquire on the status of the account your principal and interest were sent.
You would have to have known about this, as your name is written on it (pre-book entry era).
What concerns me, is that this may be a bearer bond, which are illegal now. Reason being is that this is news to you. The bond's interest would have had to have been registered in your SSN, as this is reguired by the IRS, since the interest is reported income (which means you owe them money). Now if this money was going into a trust, than you really need to find out where that trust is and if you owe any taxes on the money within it.
If someone opened the bond in your name, and it was a bearer bond, that means the interest went somewhere else (usually for someone else) wherein you do not have rights to the interest and the principal may have been collected already by the person that opened the bond.
Can you see how fishy this is already starting to become...this is tax evasion at its finest and this is why the IRS shut this loophole down.
Call Macy's. You will be needing to talk to a lot of people. There may not be any money in this for you, but it cannot hurt.
Good luck.
Hope this helped.

It was issued five years before you were born???
Seriously, you need to find out who got it for you.
