Are you saying that you went to the emergency room a week before your policy went into effect?

If that's the case, you'll have to work out a payment plan with the hospital. Insurance coverage is only valid beginning on the effective date - things that happened a week (or even a day) before the effective date of the policy are not covered.

Be certain what the effective date of your policy was - its not necessarily the date you received your cards. Its worth checking the exact effective date with your insurer, to verify for certain that your policy was not in effect at the time of your ER visit
