How long does it take for an emergency room to verify insurance coverage?

Do I just give them my policy # etc... and they mail the insurance company a bill or does the ER know exactly what coverage I have right then and there? My insurance coverage is supposed to have started as of 12/1 but the 800 number I call says not until 1/1/08. I should be covered now, but don't want to get turned away at the door or stuck with a huge bill.

IF it's truly an emergency, they won't take the time to "verify". If it's outside of business hours for your insurance company, they can't.

You give them the insurance card. They photocopy it.

There's a database that they can usually plug into, though, and find out exactly what your coverages are, who's covered, and the effective dates of coverage.

You should have an insurance card with the companies contact information and your account number on it. That lets them verify that you are covered for any procedures they suggest. Not all hospitals will check in advance though and you are stuck with the bill if you arent covered.
If its during the day they can call and verify it , in about 5 minutes. I dont know what they do after hours .
You should have a policy document that says when your coverage starts , contact your insurance agent and find out.

Depending on where you are ers can't refuse you treatment but you will be responsible for the bill. Some insurances can be verified immediately, others can not. Also in Calif it is illegal to ask about your insurance status untill you have had a medical screening exam.Best bet either get to the er or fight it out with the insurance at home

If you've called the company and they say 1/1/08, then that must be the correct answer.

Listen, in a true emergency, you seek care first and worry about the paperwork later.

ERs have an obligation to treat patients, regardless of whether or not they're insured. You give them your card, and they bill the plan. It it up to you to provide valid coverage at the time of service. Therefore, if you have insurance coverage, but the visit gets denied, it's really up to you to fight with your insurance to get it paid.
