How long do you have to work for a State Farm agent before you can go into Agency yourself?

I am currently working for an agent and am eager to get an agency of my own. How much experience does it usually take before you are a competitive candidate to make it into the agency pool?

It's going to vary. I get unsolicited offers in the mail all the time, from Nationwide, State Farm and Farmers. But I've got a LOT of years in the business.

As soon as you have your own book of $250,000, though, of sales you've made yourself, then just about any of them will be willing to give you a contract.

Have you talked to State Farm? What about other writers in your State? It always looks like the agency "owner" makes a lot of money, but, we have to pay our overhead, advertising, employees (plus all the matching of withholding) furnish you a nice place to work, and the list goes on and on!

Right now the market place is pretty soft and companies are vying for more and more market share. It might not be the right timing to try and start something new on your on!

It's good that your industrious! Talk to your agent and see what he can suggest. Maybe he could put you doing more outside sales.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

This depends on if you want to be a 'Captive Agent' or a free 'Independent Agent'.

State Farm is a captive agency.
Being captive limits your ability to offer your clients a wide range of products to best suit their needs.
Too many agencies try to 'sell' their One Size Fits All as a solution to their clients and their agents.
You can reach more clients as well as higher income by being independent.

Your time frame is dependent on 'YOU' and what you want to acheive for yourself.
I worked years for others to 'gain experience'. I wish now I had decided to become an independent agent and start my own agency years ago.
I now have it!
