Depends on how/where you keep your data.

Easiest way is to hire a third party to keep it, and let THEM be responsible for theft.

Damage, of course, is all about backups.

put an anti virus to your computer

Install a no cookie virus porotecter. Cookies cause problems.
Then install password protected documents this should prevent this from happening.

Back up all files regularly and take the backup off premises.

what data? add it to your homowners or renters policy as an additional rider.
