Does Blue Cross & Blue Shield Massachusetts cover an abortion?

I read recently that one woman had to deal with BC&BS telling her that her miscarriage was an "elective abortion," and therefore not included in coverage. This worries me. Would that then mean that actual abortion isn't covered?

Thank you in advance for any insight you may have on this :)

I would like to add that I am not considering abortion, or in need of it. I am simply curious.

In every state, BCBS has at least three plans, sometimes more. Some plans cover it, some don't. The person has to check with THEIR plan to see if it's covered.

God, I hope it isn't.

i hope its not covered

No ins covers abortion. That is something that is chosen by the mother.

Sounds like it's not covered. Which makes sense, because I have yet to find an insurance company that covered abortions. Too contraversial.

Yes, as a general thing, but individual groups may choose to opt out of that coverage. Just as an aside, I worked in health insurance for about 20 yrs and most insurance does indeed cover it IF the coverage includes obstetrical care at all.

They were probably referring to her d & c after the baby died. BCBS rejects almost everything out of hand. Some documentation from her GYN would help in this case.

Call them if you really want to know if an abortion is covered. Honestly, I would just go to planned parenthood and pay them cash - some things should be private.

Abortions are not usually covered under any type of health insurance unless they are deemed necessary to preserve the health of the mother.

Don't work for an insurance company but my guess is that they DO NOT cover it. You need to be careful. Once you tell them you got one they just might link every female problem you ever get in life to that abortion. Be careful. Insurance companies are evil. It's all about the money. It's not at all about your health or wellness.

You would need to call the number on the back of your card and ask them to if it's covered or not but I seriously doubt they do...

some insurance companies do cover abortions. you can find out on the insurance carriers website or call a rep and ask, or you could call the place where you would get it done and ask what kind of insurance they take.

if they dont you can always apply for emergency medicaid and that'll definitely take care of it.

I know most don't, but why would someone want to kill an innocent life? If your thinking about it just put the child up for adoption.

No, health insurance does not cover abortions.

I would think that no insurance would cover an abortion; this is something you would be CHOOSING to do...
