Spending down to collect ssi?

My husband has a few IRA accounts and I am disabled, but not able to collect disability for lack of credits. Does he need to cash in his IRAs so that I meet the qualifications for medical care? We both saved for years, so it seems horrid to have to pay penalties and give up much of his retirement $ To help me get needed treatment. He is currently unemployed and I am un-insurable, except through a group plan
answers or ideas?

tell him to get a job with group benefits.

Other than that, yes, you need to spend down all your cash and be basically destitute before medicaid will kick in.

Check with state non-profit Medicaid assistance group. Look for one called SHINE, if that exsists in your state they will be able to give you a world of help.

It's going to vary by state, so you'll have to check for a state specific answer, but generally, yes, the IRA, or a 401K, Keogh, or pension plan is included in your countable assets.
