Do you have to show proof of a new policy when switching car insurance?

I asked my insurance policy to be cancelled because I found a better rate (1/2 the price!) with a different company-Progressive. They won't cancel my policy without proof of other insurance. Is that in their right? They are still charging me a monthly rate because they won't cancel my policy like I asked them to. I don't think it's their business about who I'm taking my money to. Am I being stubborn? I really want to tell Allstate to shove it up their...

Many companies will not process a cancellation unless you submit proof you are insured elsewhere. I don't necessarily agree with it, but if you don't provide it, they can and probably will keep your insurance in force until it cancels for nonpayment and then send you to collections for the earned premium. You can black out all personal information such as price and submit the proof to your old agent. But this is a very common thing.

if you already have your new insurance with progressive, you shouldn't have a problem getting your policy canceled. and, they will back date it to the date that your new coverage took effect.

If you're in a state like Massachusetts, you're required to file a form when you switch from one carrier to the other.

Ask the new insurance policy to take care of the switch - the new agent should be happy to do it.

yes they are within their rights. just fax them (or have progressive do it) a copy of your new policy. they will cancel back to the date you picked it up with Progressive
