Medicaid insurance and Michigan--Am I liable for what I received? |
Two years ago I ended up in the hospital for two weeks because my kidneys shut down. I had no health insurance as I had spent everything I owned, including selling my condo and moved into my sister's house to care for her until her death the year before. I was allowed to be covered by Medicaid in Michigan. (Of course, if I was a visitor from another country, no problem.) It took 5-6 months to get approved. Anyway, at the beginning of November, my mother had a heart attack. I was thinking of selling my sister's house and moving in with my mother-in Detroit- except for the fact if I sell my sister's house, (which both my mother & I inherited), I am afraid the state will take the equity in the house and I will have nothing. My mother's home is next to worthless, needs repairs and location won't give her much in a sale. My name is also on her house. PS--I owe on the mortgage of my sister's house and my mother has been paying the mortgage from her social security. So, her moving in won't help the situation. She owns her house free and clear and we could live on the equity from the sale of my sister's house providing Michigan doesn't take all the proceeds. What a mess!!! Yes. |
