In the United States, notaries are licensed by individual states, and each state prescribes the fee that a notary may charge. Under Indiana law, the maximum fee in this state is $2. (Ind. Code 33-16-7-1).

However, as others have mentioned, banks will often provide notarization for free for their customers. So, if you have a bank, see if that is the case. If not, or if you are from another area or another country, you will usually be charged the statutory fee. As you can see, that fee is quite small.

As to how to get it done, it is pretty simple. You need to take the document you want notarized to the notary. Make sure you have NOT signed it yet. Bring along some identification, preferably a government-issued picture I.D. like a driver's license or a passport. Show the I.D. to the notary to prove who you are, then sign the document you want notarized while the notary watches you do it. (The notary is verifying that it was actually you who signed it, not some fraud.) The notary puts on the official seal and his or her signature, and that's about it. It just takes a minute or two.

I've usually paid $10 to have something notarized. Look in the yellow pages under Notary Public. Most real estate offices have one on staff.

Last I heard, no place can charge more than $3.00. You can get it done at banks, or check it out in the phone book.
