Start by thinking about the kinds of jobs that guys your age can get. Some kids have special talents, like being a computer programmer or something. But most 17 year old guys don't get that kind of job.

So you are likely limited to 3 kinds of jobs: construction, retail (stores) and restaurants. These days, getting a job in construction is tough, because the economy is down and there is less building going on. That leaves restaurants and stores.

Those kinds of jobs are almost never advertised. You get them by walking in the door and asking to speak to the manager. If they say there are no openings, then you go to the next store or the next restaurant and try again, over and over. I won't pretend this is easy to do, because it is not, and it certainly is not any fun at all. But "pounding the pavement" is how most people are hired for jobs like that.

And here is a tip: dress like you could start work immediately if they hired you. Of course, they probably won't. If you are lucky, you will be told to come back the next day for an interview, but you should *look* like you could go right into the job that second. This means that you wear clean clothes. No torn jeans, no dirty sneakers, no death-metal t-shirts (well, the t-shirt might work at a record store, but not at a supermarket). But you also don't overdress. You wouldn't wear a jacket and tie to work at McDonald's, so don't walk in that way asking for a job.

As I said, this is not easy. You will probably be turned down 20 times before you are given a chance. But keep at it. It's the only way.
