What are the jobs like in Indianapolis? |
My girlfriend and I want to move to Indianapolis from New Hampshire and we will have a newborn baby with us. Some people tell us that the quality of living is much better there (lower costs for living, ect), and other people are telling us that it is a very depressed area and there isnt a lot of money there. Can anyone tell me what types of jobs are available, how hard is it to find a job, and how much can I expect to make on average? Any help on this would be very appreciated.... Indy has a greatly booming healthcare market, that being my profession is the only one I can vouch for. Indy does have wide spread population demographics, meaning that there are impoverished folks around but there are also plenty of people doing really well in this city and it's suburbs. The biggest hubub around here at the moment is property taxes which are a mess and currently being re-accessed by the state. If you can move anywhere else in the country, why are you moving to Indy? I've lived in Indiana my whole life (42 years) and I can't wait until my kids are finished with school so I can move out West. Indy has two extremes in housing - very good, and rotten. I have family that has lived in the rotten areas. They moved to Georgia and Florida. As for jobs, if you have a college degree and/or a specialty line of employment, then hire a head-hunter to help make it worthwhile, otherwise you will be working at Walmart or other retail stores. You could also consider employment at the airport. Housing and schools get better as you leave the city and move into the burbs, but be careful because even then, those areas are exclusively high-end. Indy has a good zoo and a children's museum that is great. Southern Indiana is beautiful with lots of wildlife and nature and caves. Yep, caves in Southern Indiana. Very historical down there also. I'm not impressed with Indy or any areas north of there. Indiana has an awful property tax system in place. They tax you, forget that they taxed you and tax you again. They are constantly changing their tax laws so it is difficult to fight an assessment. Indiana politics aren't the best, as Indiana is one of the highest with voting fraud. Basically, if you are dead and lived in Indiana, you can still vote. Neither the tax issue nor the voting issues have been fixed and this has been going on since I began to read the newspaper in 1976 for a school project. Homeschool laws are family friendly as is adoption laws. We grow corn and road bumps in Indiana. All major highways are constantly under construction. Not sure why they have never gotten it done, though. Cattle farms and hog farms relocate to Indiana from other states. I would consider the north side of indy... like Fishers, Carmel, or Noblesville. The rent isn't too outrageous. There are jobs.. you just have to look hard to find them. It really depends on what you want. Cost of living is somewhat reasonable compared to other places. As far as jobs it depends. There is a lot of business growth in all areas. Check out http://www.careerbuilder.com |
