The best tools I know to getting hotel discounts are Hotwire.com and Priceline.com. And the best way to use them is to play them off each other.

Both Hotwire and Priceline tell you the star rating and general area for their hotels. The main difference is that Hotwire gives you an exact price and Priceline lets you make up your own bid.

So, go first to Hotwire and see what they have. You might see, for example, that they have a 3-star hotel for $75 and a 2-star for $60. Let's say that you decide you want a 3-star hotel. You would then go to Priceline.com and bid LESS than $75 on a 3-star. I usually bid 20-30 percent less, so maybe you would offer $55 or $60. If your offer is accepted, great! You have your hotel. If it is refused (and that happens pretty often) just go back to Hotwire and accept the $75 price, knowing that it is the best you can get.

By knowing what Hotwire is offering, you can be sure that you will not over-bid on Priceline. And if you can get the hotel for even less, so much the better. Try this system--it really works. Good luck!!
