How do I apply for a grant to help the Humane Society? What's the process and how do I find info?

I'm doing a project for a nearby shelter (through my college class work, but its something Im REALLY passionate about)

they just opened a new facility and are trying to raise money. My mom suggested that my teammates and I look into getting a grant to help out.

How do I do that? Who do I contact? What do I say? What should I know before going in there? I know I'll probably have to write a proposal, but how should I approach it?

I need places near Indianapolis Indiana that would provide grants, how do i search for these places?
