Does a owner of a restraunt have the right to watch you work from his cameras at home?

ok i work in a fast food restraunt and we have cameras everywhere! I was told that our owner has the cameras hooked up at home and he watches us all the time. I was wondering is that was legal because i feel like i am being watched all the time. i feel i have no privacy!

I used to work in an environment also monitored by surveillance cameras.

Unfortunately it is legal. Where I used to work they placed signs all over the place, calling attention to the fact that you could be subject to monitoring or video surveillance. I am unsure if that was their own policy or required by law.

The employer has a right to monitor his business interest.

Although you probably feel like it is an invasion of your privacy, just remember not to do anything in front of the cameras, that you would not do in the presence of your boss.

Look at the bright side the cameras can also work in your favor and protect you from any possible wrongful accusations.

They may also protect your safety by providing a crime deterrent.

If he had a manager that he hired to sit there and watch you, would that be an invasion of privacy too?

What about if he himself were there, is that an invasion of your privacy?

Does your boss not have the right to see what happens in his own business?

You're watching too many movies and listening too much to the idiotic ACLU.

The only place he has no right to watch you would be the bathroom. If he has a camera in the bathroom and you're a female employee and he's a male, then that's wrong, immoral, illegal and out-of-bounds.

But otherwise, he has every right. It's his business. Employers also have the right to monitor employees' email and everything else they do on the company's computers and on the company's time.

You are at WORK. You do not have a right to privacy in the workplace, excluding breaks and bathroom. The man is protecting his investment in workers and property. If he felt the need to have this stuff installed, he's obviously had problems in the past. If you feel threatened, it would behoove you to find another place that does not have trust issues with the employees.

NO it's against the law and totally sick u don't know what he's up to ''ur not in big brother'' u should report him to the police as he's violating ur privacy

Wether or not your owner watches you or not, there are usually cameras in fast food resturaunts, or in any store for that matter. I do not believe your boss is actaully watching the cameras at home for two reasons:

1) He has a life. He probobly doesn't think about work very much at home.

2) It would be a lot of trouble to get the cameras installed and for him to be able to view a live feed at home.

For these reasons, I do believe that these cameras are standard security cameras and that you were told the owner was watching just to get you to work harder.

A private employer can impose all kinds of condtions on your work and you have the option of accepting those conditions or leaving. The exception arises where you have a contract that spells out the conditions of employment. Realistically, that requires a union. See if you can get the hotel and restaurant workers union interested in your shop. Otherwise, the offer of emploement is extended day after day and you accept it or decline it day after day.

It is not against the law. He has every right to monitor his employees while they are on the clock for him. When you are at work and someone is paying you to do a job, you are supposed to do it. There is no privacy issue involved (unless as was mentioned in another answer, there is a camera in the bathroom or something). Otherwise, perfectly legal.
