I want to go for a REGISTERED NURSE and then later on to a MIDWIFE?

okay so i am going to a community college in North Carolina. and they have either

LPN/ADN option
OR
associate degree nursing
OR
practical nursing

which one should i sign up for? OR could it be that none of these will lead me into becoming an RN. doesnt it take 4 years?

I am guessing that the LPN / ADN option is for existing LPNs who wish to complete their ADN to earn their RN license. Practical nursing refers to an LPN program, and the ADN program is the straight-up 2 year RN program, which is what you want if you want to eventually be a midwife.

Some people find it helpful to become an LPN first, it can be valuable work experience, but it is absolutely NOT necessary. MANY RNs were never LPNs first and they are perfectly capable.

Understand that getting into an RN program is not just about "signing up". There are specific requirements your school will have for courses you need completed, such as chemistry, biology, anatomy & physiology, etc. before you can even apply to the nursing program, and even then, admission is competative and you might not get in the first year you apply. So it could very well be a longer process than you're anticipating.

You really need to sit down with an admissions rep at the school you will attend and find out from them the exact steps of their admissions process.

Later, once you actually complete the program and have your RN license, you can then complete your BSN degree in as little as 1.5 years or so. You'll also need at least 2-3 years of work experience in Labor & Delivery if you want to get into a midwifery program for graduate school.

Good luck!

I will say take the lpn/adn. Im an lpn and see that many nurses that just went for their rn have it hard because they dont have the hands on training some dont even know how to do blood pressure right. I think its better to work your way up. If you want to become a midwife, i think you have to get a bachelors and then specialize to become a midwife. Im not sure but i dont think an assoc degree nurse can become a midwife.
