If I become an EMT will I have enough time for school to get my B.S.?

I have heard of Paramedics getting worked like dogs because they need them. I am worried that if I get EMT-B certified than get a job that I will have class the next day or have to study and them say, no we need you to work and extra 12 hours.
I think it may be different for EMT-B.

Anyone have experience in going to school and being an EMT?

(I live near Sacramento, CA if this helps)

If you are a total genius and a expert multi-tasking then I would say you get your EMT-B by taking night classes and get your B.S. by taking day classes. But this is suicide and you would not have any life not to mention unless you are seriously smart the workload will overcome you. I am working on my finishing my B.S. then going on to get a Masters in physicians assistant. I got my emt-b two summers ago while out of college for summer. Another problem you face is that emergency services jobs are highly competitive, yes you may have a certification but so does 500-2000+ other people applying for that job depending on the emergency service and the city. You may get certified and find it takes awhile to actually get hired on.
Another problem is that in most areas the pay is not the greatest unless you continue on to get your paramedic even then you are looking at a sub par salary compared to the service you provide to the community. If you do get certified and then get a job as a basic you will not be able to obtain a B.S. because of the shifts EMT's work. The other person was slightly mistaken, the EMT's in her area might work 24 hour shifts every three days but that is only that agency, there are so many different shift schedule combinations that I could easily write out an extra paragraph or two. What I am getting at is that every couple of days you will be stuck at that agency for 12 or 24 hours and unable to attend class so attending college classes are impossible as there is no set days you work because your schedule follows a pattern where you may work MWF this week and next week you work TThS. The only solution to this is to find a B.S. program that allows you to take all online classes. There are a few out there that does this but really it kinda ruins the whole college experience. If you are determined to do this the best way to go about it is to go to college and get a B.S. in something emergency services related, get your EMT-B during one of your summers off from college, then look in your area to see if there is a volunteer EMS or volunteer Fire/EMS agency you can join to run some calls and get some experience then once you are in your last semester about to get your B.S. you start applying for emergency services jobs. Don't even think about EMT-Paramedic + B.S. as this course of study is highly demanding and challenging not to mention it lasts around two years depending on the class schedule and area.

Hey, I became an EMT to boost my resume for medical school. I did a summer program at a community college.

EMT's and Paramedics work a 24 hour shift every three days. Therefore, unless you plan on missing every third day of school, it probably would not be a viable job.

However, there are other things you can do as an EMT-B. I work in the ER as an ER Tech part time. And yes, I have time to get my B.S., I graduate in a month :) You can also work for a transport service.

Good luck!!
