Is anyone and RN?

I was thinking about changing my major and go for nursing. So i have sort of looked into the difference of and RN and LPN and decided RN would be better. The only problem is i havent been able to find and in depth job description. So i was wondering things that i should know about becoming and RN and what it would be like to be and RN and is there anyway i can shadow a nurse for a day to really see what they do first hand? Any information would be helpful!

Well, it's sort of hard to give a very detailed description of what nurses do, so I will highlight the important parts.

First, the foundation of RN practice is in the "nursing process", Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning, Interventions, Evaluation. We assess our patients, give them a nursing diagnosis (which is NOT the same as a medical diagnosis), create a plan that meets certain goals or outcomes that would fit their top needs, perform interventions to meet those goals, and then evaluate the results, and start the process over again.

It's far deeper and involves more critical thinking than just taking vital signs and knowing what is normal and what is not, more than just passing medications, more than just charting on patients, etc. You do a lot of patient education, teaching them about their conditions, how to manage them, teach them about their medications, side effects, etc. You are responsible for delegating tasks to assistive personnel like nursing assistants, all the while remaining completely responsible and legally liable for anything that might go wrong.

If you work in a hospital, expect to work some weekends and holidays. Expect to have some degree of stress - no nursing job is completely stress free, but some areas of practice are genuinely more stressful than others (ER, L&D, etc.).
The great thing about nursing is the diversity in opportunities that are available. You don't have to do direct patient care for your whole career. There is case management, nursing administration, education, professional development, etc., all kinds of administrative-based positions you could get into if you find patient care gets to be too much. You will make a good wage no matter what position you take, and you will have job stability for the duration of your career because of the impending and worsening nursing shortage.

If you want to shadow a nurse, call a local hospital and ask to speak to their education department and ask if shadowing is a possibility. Not all hospitals will do this for you.

Good luck, whatever you decide!
