Are you in a Union at work?

I am interested to hear how this has helped people and about the benefits. I am thinking of joining maybe Unison, as I work in the Voluntary Sector, but any opinions people have could be of use.

Never been in a union..........always worked with a union........job security from and protection is a great union benefit.........The company I worked for layed me off 7 months before I retired............sucks..............

Well I have been in a couple of unions, and am now on the side of management. One thing I have noticed is that union for the most part protect those with seniority above and beyond everyone else. and are happy to take a chunk of your change in order to do this. At a point in our history they where desperately need to insure that workers had rights, and they fought for them bravely. In todays world they have become a dinasour that feeds upon itself causing more production problems then fixes, and most likely is the largest contributor to jobs moving overseas. It is not the wages but the protected status and jobs as in you cannot have a fluent workforce going to where they are needed, That and the fact that if you are a good worker, and actually produce more that they think is neccesary, you will be shunned. Unions tend to blame the companies for sending jobs overseas, they should look a little farther within.
